Those couple days we were in and out of the doctors were pretty stressful on us/me. I went in thinking, "easy in and out with some antibiotics." How wrong I was! The look on the doctors face when they first looked in his ear and said, "hmm" was priceless. When a doctor says hmm and has 2-3 others come in to get a "second opinion" you know you are in trouble.
After being seen at Urgent Care for a couple hours they finally decided it was to much for their capabilities and referred us out to ENT. Waiting a couple more hours there the ENT specialist was able to see us and pretty much knew from the get go that Derrick would have to be put to sleep to get out whatever foreign object was in his ear.
The next morning we arrived at the surgery center at 6am. I was nervous to say the least but Derrick was so easy going and unafraid! It took us awhile to check in and get all prepped. Derrick grinned ear to ear when he knew I had to get dressed up like doctor mom. The next part was hardest for me. The quiet and the eeriness that takes over the operating room as they put Derrick to sleep was a little overwhelming. Of course the nurses there were use to that and I think one was even "assigned" to make sure I didn't turn into momma bear. She kept telling me, "it is harder on the parents then the kids."
Just as quickly as he fell asleep he was awake and I was back with him within 30 minutes! He woke up groggy and a little confused how he got there but within a half hour he was clear headed again. The rest of the day he was shaky but all in all the procedure went off without a hitch! Derrick still says he has no idea how that pieces of field corn got in his ear. To me it doesn't really matter no reason to upset him more then he already was when it was obvious a lesson was learned there that day by all! A week later we were back there to see how the damage had healed up and there was no damage to his hearing or his ear drum!
Our kids can definitely be rough and tumble and we have been to the ER our fair share of times and even know how to use our own liquid bandage now! However, this has been one of the scarier trips we have taken. I remember and thank God everyday how truly healthy our kids are!
